Erik Gonzales
t e r r a f i r m a
[ august 10th - 26th, 2012 ]
Erik Gonzales’ work is an amalgam of past and present and a testament to the mythic power of time to erode and erase. His imagery ranges from fossils imbedded in geological sediment to amphorae on ancient walls. Without romanticism, or even narrative, his pieces serve to remind us that we coexist with the archaic and like all things, will eventually disappear in the ebb of time.
Terra Firma invites the viewer to explore his new body of work that is produced with great physicality from various marble dusts and other earthen clays. After creating his initial images, Gonzales will work the surfaces until they are worn, cracked and broken in appearance to convey the dichotomy between the permanent and the impermanent.
Erik Gonzales was raised in Colorado and Connecticut and studied in Spain and at Arizona State University. Gonzales has exhibited in several notable institutions and invitationals such as the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, the Florence Biennale, the Bronx Museum, the Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Art and the Riverside Art Museum.
