Alberto Gálvez is renowned for his exquisite oil paintings of timeless figures that blend a contemporary sensibility with a deep knowledge of western art history. Uniting the classical ideal of the contemplative gaze and renaissance techniques, he gradually paints translucent colors over monochromatic underpainting to create an ethereal tonality in his figures.
In this exhibition, La Naturalista: Iconos de luz, he references the early pioneers of photography who changed our notions of portraiture by having the sitter look directly at the camera for a long exposure. In his paintings, he explores this idea of these icons of light, but softens the contours, while retaining the serene power of the distant gaze touch the viewer.
