(SANTA MONICA) Nüart Gallery is pleased to present “The Space Between,” a two-person exhibition featuring new work by William T. Carson + Emilio Lobato, on view from February 28 through March 21, 2026, at the gallery’s Bergamot Station location, with an opening reception on Saturday, February 28, from 4:00 - 6:00 pm.
William T. Carson + Emilio Lobato: The Space Between
The exhibition title refers to both a physical and conceptual condition: the negative space where light, material, and meaning emerge. In Carson’s copper installations, illumination emanates not from a singular object but from the intervals between elements—light occupying space as an active presence. The phrase also speaks to measurement and distance in Lobato’s work, where space itself becomes a unit of meaning.
Carson’s practice explores perception through material restraint, employing copper and coal—substances that absorb, reflect, and subtly modulate light. His works reveal themselves gradually, rewarding close attention and emphasizing the unseen forces at play between surfaces.
Lobato presents abstracted geometric compositions constructed from vintage electricians’ measuring sticks. These rulers function as metaphorical tools, referencing the human impulse to measure and quantify experience—social media metrics, financial value, domestic space, personal milestones, and imagined futures. His work reflects on record-keeping as a fundamental human behavior, one that imposes order while quietly shaping identity and desire.
Together, Carson and Lobato enter into a quiet dialogue grounded in what lies beyond immediate visibility. Layers of history, labor, and embedded meaning reside within the materials themselves, existing in the space between object and observer, measurement and intuition, surface and depth. Rather than imposing a single narrative, The Space Between invites viewers to move through the gallery with attentiveness, forming connections attuned to scale, distance, and the subtleties that unfold over time.
