Daniel Phill has developed a unique style that is not bound to either representation or abstraction. First and foremost a colorist, Phill often creates with fiery, saturated hues. Working in an Expressionist style, he pieces together organic shapes in his paintings and teases images from splatters of paint. His canvases demonstrate an impressive control of the materials used. In large, loose gestures, he describes essential details — long, slender tendrils become reeds, pressed and flattened pools of paint turn into petals, and delicate veins emerge from colors bleeding together. Known mostly for his abstracted botanical imagery, the paintings bear his signature bold strokes and improvised gestures. Phill's approach has been described as using an “unrehearsed expressionism” in an “anarchic manner.”

This evolving series is my abstracted interpretation of the natural world. It is an ongoing reimagining of vegetation, flowers and the landscape. I rely partly on intuition, trusting in the gestures and mark making that come with a spontaneous approach. The color palette and composition of these paintings is affected by what I see from my studio windows—looking out to the nearby bay. My work is also influenced by repeated travels to the lush green environs of the Pacific Northwest, where I grew up. Multiple layers of translucent color contribute to the overall mood and depth of each piece. I approach my work with an open mind, curious to see what is to come of the paintings in progress. I aim to create paintings that are organic and unfolding, playing between the boundaries of abstraction and representation.  — Daniel Phill

These deftly shaped compositions enunciate both artist’s inventive approach to distinct landscape and narrative intention. Through matured, palpable mark-making and enchantingly profound storytelling, each artist enlivens perceptual objectivity and displays an expanding vision of the world.
