Hyunmee Lee: monochromatic explorations

22 July - 7 August 2016

Hyunmee Lee’s transcendent paintings evoke a sensual lyricism formed by western 20th century abstraction and spontaneous gestures that echo eastern calligraphy.  Inspired by her recent relocation to Santa Fe, Lee’s new series of work emphasizes mark making and doing more in layers of black when applied in varying thicknesses on the paintings’ surface.  Employing many different tools, is part of this new poetic exploration of place and a clear progression in her art that nonetheless remains powerful in its simplicity, its spontaneity, its rhythms and finally in its all-important gesture.
