Peter Stephens: Fuzzy Logic
Nüart Gallery is pleased to present Fuzzy Logic, a new exhibition of paintings by Peter Stephens. Known for his precise yet playful approach to abstraction, Stephens’ practice continues to evolve, mastering and exploring his precise technique through intuitive decision-making.

The title, Fuzzy Logic, embodies his characteristic humor. “Most of my painting titles are lighthearted references to cultural clichés or the oddly named colors from the commercial paint industry,” Stephens explains. “It is in this spirit of humor and a bit of irreverence that I find the title just right.”

Stephens’ process often takes unexpected turns. “When a new form is added—such as the rotating ribbons in this work—it opens up all kinds of possibilities,” he notes. “Sometimes this initiates a direction quite different than the original plan.” His paintings begin with subjects of deep interest—most recently fundamental physics and the laws of nature—which inspire complex grids of color and acrylic line work that recall mosaics, textiles, and scientific diagrams.

His structures are carefully planned, yet color and form emerge spontaneously as each painting evolves. Stephens wants viewers to experience his work from multiple perspectives—immersed in detail up close, and from afar where optical blending creates shifting rhythms of color and light. “So many different perceptions can be had at all different focal lengths,” he observes.

For Stephens, this continual invention keeps the work alive: “The evolution moves forward with new forms and refinement of existing ones, quite Darwinian as I see it. Where next? I never know, and that’s what keeps everything so enjoyable.”
