Hyunmee Lee is a contemporary artist whose practice spans more than four decades across South Korea, Australia, and the United States. Born in Seoul, she developed her artistic foundation through the study of Western modern art alongside experiencing in Eastern painting and calligraphy. 

Her work is recognized for its distinctive process of “meditative gesture.” Deeply influenced by Asian calligraphy and shaped by Taoist and Buddhist philosophies, Lee creates paintings that explore the balance between opposing energies—stillness and movement, control and spontaneity, emptiness and fullness. Her earlier works emphasized restraint, quietness, and minimal forms, rooted in meditative presence and a belief that simplicity itself could feel complete. Over the past decade, however, experimentation with rice paper and wash techniques has expanded her visual language, allowing calligraphic movement to re-emerge in more instinctive, physical, and gestural ways.
