(SANTA FE, NM) Nüart Gallery is pleased to present Rhythm and Gesture, an exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by Hyunmee Lee and Lloyd Martin, on view from June 5 – June 27, 2026, with an opening reception on Friday, June 5, from 5:00–7:00 PM.

Hyunmee Lee + Lloyd Martin: Rhythm and Gesture

Nüart Gallery in Santa Fe is pleased to present Rhythm and Gesture, an exhibition bringing together two distinct approaches to abstraction through new paintings and works on paper by Hyunmee Lee and Lloyd Martin.

Hyunmee Lee’s paintings unfold through fluid gesture, textured surfaces, and calligraphic movement, while Lloyd Martin’s compositions develop through rhythmic structures, geometric intervals, and spatial construction. Across painting and works on paper, both artists engage process as a gradual act of accumulation, revision, and sustained attention to surface.

For many years, Lee’s work centered on restraint, meditative presence, and the subtle articulation of space. This new body of work expands that language through increasingly fluid calligraphic movement, layered textures, and luminous passages of color that introduce a heightened emotional energy into the paintings. Her works on paper remain integral to the development of the practice, functioning as open fields of experimentation where collage, printmaking, and repeated interventions allow the imagery to continually shift and evolve over time.

Martin’s paintings develop through rhythmic systems of intersecting bands, geometric divisions, and shifting spatial intervals. Color moves across the surface with a measured intensity, generating a sense of momentum grounded within the architectural framework of the composition. Built through layering and adjustment, the paintings reveal an ongoing engagement with process, where structure, movement, and material surface remain inseparable from one another.

In Rhythm and Gesture, Lee and Martin approach abstraction through materially and visually distinct languages shaped through time, repetition, and process. Gesture, rhythm, structure, and movement emerge gradually within the surface of each work, allowing the paintings to unfold through accumulation and sustained engagement with form.
